Chaos and Order
mit Massimo Polello & Marí Emily Bohley
Course fully booked – waiting list.
From Lettera Capitalis Monumentalis to writing “without rules”
The Lettera Capitalis Monumentalis is a perfect example of precision, equilibrium: ORDER in the classic and purest sense of the word. The aim of the first part of the course is to present the Roman letters in their purest forms, proportions and spacing, written initially with an ordinary pencil and then with a flat brush. The second part will develop and explore the different ways of executing a freer form of writing. A form of writing that is driven by instinct, and comes from the “gut”, writing that arises from Dionysus’ CHAOS, which has apparently no rules. Finally, we will combine capitalis letters and free writing, Order and Chaos and we will incorporate it in a book.
Materials: writing tools (most important is a automatic pen no. 4 or 5 and possibly nibs, brushes, balsa wood, etc.), writing brush you will need a flat brush 16 to 18 mm wide “Winsor-Newton” (two different versions avaliable*) or “Da Vinci” (green handle), writing fluid (most important extra-fine quality gouache – Schmincke, Talens, Windsor Newton are all fine; black ink, Ecoline or water color), possibly for mixing colors (some flat ceramic plates for the gouache, small containers, brushes), possibly bookbinding tools (scissors, cutter, steel ruler, cutting mat, bone folder, etc.), paper any kind of good quality paper around 160-180 g/m² Canson or Hahnemühle – Arches (8 sheets light colors and 2 black), cloth one piece of fabric (cotton) around 100 x 50 cm to use to write on it. An old bed linen or t-shirt etc. is fine to practice with the brush on fabric. shop: During the course there will be a small shop with calligraphy and bookbinding tools and some papers (like colored Ingres, transparent paper, big sheets of Hahnemühle 70 x 100 cm, 120 g/m²). The materials for the book cover will be provided and are included in the course fee.
